Stretch Ceiling Finishes Explained: Matte, Satin, Gloss, Translucent & Printed

A stretch ceiling is a tensioned membrane, and that membrane comes in several finishes — each with a different look and ideal use. FlexCeiling Pro works with premium German vinyl membranes in over 300 colours across the finishes below. Here is how to tell them apart.

Matte

Matte has no reflection — it reads like a flawless painted ceiling, but perfectly flat and seamless. It is the most understated finish and suits homes, offices and any space where you want the ceiling to feel natural rather than glossy.

Satin

Satin sits between matte and gloss, with a soft, gentle sheen. It lifts a room slightly and reflects a little light without the mirror effect of full gloss — a versatile middle ground for living spaces and hospitality.

Gloss / lacquer

A high-gloss lacquer membrane is reflective, almost mirror-like. It bounces light around the room and visually increases the sense of height and space, which makes it popular in compact rooms, retail and feature areas. It pairs especially well with good lighting.

Translucent (backlit)

A translucent membrane is designed to be lit from behind, turning the whole ceiling into a soft, even glow with no visible fittings. It is the basis of backlit feature ceilings in lobbies, showrooms, spas and homes.

Printed

Printed membranes carry a custom image — a sky, a pattern, artwork or a company logo — printed directly into the surface. They are ideal for branded spaces, children's rooms and statement ceilings.

Which finish should you choose?

It depends on the look you want and how the space is lit. As a rule of thumb: matte for a natural ceiling, gloss to open up and reflect light, translucent for backlighting, and printed for a custom statement. We are happy to bring samples to a free site visit so you can see them in your own light.
